Pittsburgh Headshot Photographer

I love helping Pittsburgh professionals create photos that reflect their image and brand. Corporate headshots are my specialty. In today's world, where your online presence is almost as important as your "actual presence", having a good headshot is a necessity. Your headshot is your virtual business card and many times the first impression for your clients or potential employers. Your updated headshot will reflect your confidence and approachability. I am proud to have a long Pittsburgh lineage that provides the most modern headshots for Pittsburgh professionals. I am located in the historic William Penn Office Suites. Within a block from the Allegheny County Courthouse, Steel Building, and Mellon Center.

5 Reasons you need a career-making headshot for your ERAS Medical Residency Application.

We’ve talked a lot about personal branding and how important it is to utilize your headshot photos on social media. Let’s take a moment to review the reasons you need an amazing headshot for your Medical Residency Application.

1. Keep in mind the program director and/or anyone looking at your application will see your headshot before you’re chosen for an interview.

2. If a paper application is used, yours will go in a pile with many other applications. Most applications are electronic now, but either way your headshot will be a key factor in your ability to stand out from the other applicants.

3. As your application process progresses, your application could be looked at for hours by faculty members as they’re deliberating your candidacy for residency. If they do that on a projector, then a professional headshot is going to stand out that much more. I wouldn’t want to risk my future by not having a professional headshot.

4. Medical residency is a minimum of three years for primary care physicians and up to five years for some surgical specialties. The photo from your application will be with you on everything at the hospital, from the residency webpage to the hospital roster, for the next 3 to 5 years.

Could a professional application photo really help my chances at being selected for a medical residency?

5. According to a Bias in Radiology Resident Selection study published by Association of American Medical Colleges, students applying to residency have a better rate of selection if they have headshots that show attractiveness, and have an URM status equivalent of 5-9 points or higher. So yes, an amazing headshot is extremely important and can absolutely be career making for you.

How do you show attractiveness in a headshot photo? It is not by being a model or extra fit. It is all about your expression. That is what I will help you with. The photo on the application is actually quite small so you need a professional to help make sure your expression is perfect.

I’m not a big makeup person. Should I have someone do my makeup before my Headshot Photo shoot?

You would think that having makeup done is always a good thing. After all, on HD TV video productions it’s essential.

Photo-photography is a little different. Because we are capturing a point in time, and not continual movement.

The goal of a great headshot photo is to have a good photo that looks like you. “Authentic” is the catch-word of the decade. A photo that feels “real” when a person is looking at your profile. What is “real”?

I find that there are two distinct and opposite groups of women when it comes to daily makeup, and the “middle ground” between the two is fast disappearing in our modern age.

The first group is women who have a detailed process of making-over their face every day. Foundation, concealer, possibly contouring, eyebrow shaping, various eye shadows & liners, mascara & added lashes, and lip liner and stunning lipstick. I view these women as face-artists, as all of that process is truly an art. Many women do a beautiful job on their makeup, and would never leave their house without it.

The second group is made of women like me. Who, somehow, have come to a point in life where makeup is not a part of it. Whether that comes from having too busy a life, or just being comfortable in your natural skin … I don’t know. For me it’s both. Painted skin and eyeshadows and liners and bright lipstick, while I think they look beautiful on other women, I feel like it looks fake on me. So my daily look is pretty much curled eyelashes with mascara on the uppers only.

So for those of you women in the second group, if you are coming in for a headshot session that is an authentic you, what should you do?

Have you ever been to a conference where you’re looking at the presenter’s marketing materials, and it looks nothing like her?

And not necessarily because the photo is old. In her headshot photo she has heavy, gorgeous makeup and her hair is blown-out and meticulously styled. But as you look at her at this conference, her hair is tied back, she has a touch of lip gloss & mascara and is in her “natural skin.”

OUR WORK

Corporate Headshot

We have two examples of Morgan. When she came in for the first time (the picture with the red shirt), she had a friend do her makeup. It looked good.

Corporate Headshots near me

But Morgan expressed concern because she wasn’t used to wearing foundation and that much makeup, and it didn’t quite feel like “her.” So a week later, we re-shot it. And she did her every-day makeup. No foundation, no brow filler.

Professional Photography Studio

Both are beautiful pictures of her. And people will have differing opinions as far as which one is “better.” But if you are one of the women in our “second group”, what do you think?

Professional Photographer

Do you feel it is necessary to have your makeup done by a third party? Or do you prefer to have your natural beauty show, and have a photo that reflects the best “you”?

Professional Portrait

When may you want to have someone do your makeup for a photo session? These would be for high-fashion stylized shoots, where the goal is not to look “real.”

Business Photographer

Or maybe for your wedding, where it’s also usually desired to look different than your everyday best.

Model Portraits

But what if you’re a person who likes to wear makeup, and wants some help for the best look for their photo shoot? Then I’d suggest a makeup artist.

Model Headshots

Whatever you choose, we’ll have a great time during your session. And we’ll get a photo that reflects your brand and how you want to market yourself.

Where can I get a proper photo for my Canada PR and passport in Pittsburgh?

Are you looking for a photographer for your Passport photo or PR photo for Canada in Pittsburgh? Jen Barker Worley Photography has been providing passport photos for Canada for years. We are experts so you don’t have to worry about a complicated process to get your passport photos.

Photos for you PR card (permanent resident card) have slightly different requirements from the Canadian Passport photo requirements. If you are in need of a passport photo we are happy to help. Click here for pricing and to book your appointment.

“My passport has been rejected twice already.”

You do not want this to be your story! Canadian passports are actually pretty simple… you just can’t usually go to a cheap US passport place, because they can’t be flexible. Unfortunately many people are receiving rejection after rejection. This will cost you more time and money. I hope you find us first to save you all this hassle.

Do you take Canadian Permanent Residency photos?

Yes we do

Would you also cut the photos to the appropriate dimensions?

Yes, in fact you will receive 2 printed passport photos cut to size and the digital copy.

Will you be able to certify as mentioned in the specification?

No, the “certify” is supposed to be by someone who knows you: doctor, neighbor, workmate, etc.

As you might already know, the Canadian requirements are very strict, I was wondering if you had a chance to work with someone for Canadian photos (passport/PR card) specifically?

Your application will be rejected if your photos do not meet these specifications.

Medical considerations

Wheelchairs: If you are in a wheelchair, we recommend that a plain white blanket placed over the wheelchair behind the applicant’s head so that your facial features and the edges of your face are clearly visible.

Headwear or nasal cannula: When required for medical reasons, you can wear headwear or a nasal cannula in your permanent resident photo – as long as your eyes remain clearly visible. We recommend that you include a signed explanation with your application. We may request that you submit a letter from your doctor.

Why is my website slow?

Website speed is extremely important, and photos can definitely be a source of slow load times for your website. Most people use Baseline JPEG photos. If you compress your photos be careful not to ruin them with too much compression. A Baseline JPEG loads differently compared to a Progressive JPEG. The Progressive JPEG is a much better solution for a website. How will progressive JPEG images improve website performance?

In addition to the better visual experience, progressive JPEG images are 2% to 10% smaller in size compared to baseline pictures. So we recommend that you convert your baseline JPEG’s to a Progressive JPEG so it will improve the loading of your website and overall performance. Your requests to the server will be shorter and more efficient, which will also reduce your resource usage such as bandwidth, disk space. That is extremely efficient if you are hosting a website on free or shared hosting services. Websites with a large amount of baseline JPEG pictures will also greatly benefit from the lossy compression into progressive JPEG images. It is also worth mentioning that visitors who access your website via mobile device or slow internet connection will have an overall better visual experience and faster load times if you use progressive jpeg images.

4 Rules to Capturing the Perfect Instagram Photo

We all know that Instagram reformats our images after we post them. They get edited into a square frame (ugh!). Trust us, we know this can seem frustrating. We can help! We’ve put together a couple of tips in order to help you take the best possible photos for Instagram right from the start.

Before we go over advice for creating the perfect composition, lets quickly talk about taking the photo itself. The automatic camera app on your iPhone, as well as any extra camera app you may download, has the ability to directly take a square photo. If you know that you’re going to be posting this picture on Instagram, this is the way to go. When you take the photo in a square mode originally, it keeps you from having to crop it later. Cropping the photo later may result in a lower-quality photo on top of also having to change the original composition you worked so hard to create.

Now let’s talk about capturing the perfect square photo with a composition guaranteed to catch any viewers eye scrolling by.

Jen Barker Worley Photography - (412) 370-4520 Links

1. Place Subject in Center. You may have heard in the past that you shouldn’t place your main subject in the direct center. Normally we might agree with this, unless it’s a headshot, particularly a business headshot, but when it comes to square photos, forget it! With square photos, if the main subject is strong and can tell its own story, then it can draw enough attention to be placed in the center of the photo.

2. Fill Entire Frame. Think about taking up the entire frame. Remember, these photos are probably going to be looked at on a small iPhone screen. Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean completely getting rid of blank space. Some blank space is necessary in order to both keep balance and to be aesthetically pleasing.

3. Center Your Grids. We’ve talked before about how iPhones have the ability to show grids across the images you are taking. You can use these grids to either follow the rule of thirds as we’ve discussed before, or you can also use to do create another pleasing look. If you’re doing a larger landscape or a photo with smaller subjects, center those small subjects within the grid squares.

4. Make Your Own Rules. We like to remind people that while photography has plenty of “rules” or guidelines, to follow in order to help create an aesthetically pleasing composition, photography is still art. We like to remind people, make your own rules! Photography is about so much more than simply “taking the perfect photo”. Use your design, your eye, and your vision to take shots nobody else would take.
