How Do I Become an Information Technology Specialist? Many IT professionals have an Associates, Bachelor's, or higher degree in computer science, information technology, or a related discipline. Some firms, however, will take relevant experience in lieu of a degree. There are also a variety of certification programs available to assist in gaining the abilities required to specialize and grow in this industry, such as CCNA, ITIL, MCSA, Network+, CSM, or CompTIA A+ certificates. It is critical to gain IT experience and skills in this field. You must grasp how computers function and be capable of installing and maintaining software, hardware, computer systems, and networks. Because information technology is a continually changing profession, you will need to stay up to date with new technologies and innovations. You could work as an IT professional in a variety of contexts, such as businesses, government agencies, or educational institutions. You could also work as a self-employed consultant. You will need to be able to communicate effectively with non-technical personnel and users no matter where you work. As your career progresses, you may wish to specialize in an area of IT, such as security or network management. With experience and specialized knowledge, you can advance to the position of IT manager or director.
