How Do I Become an Information Technology Specialist? Many IT specialists possess an Associates degree, Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, information technology, or a related field. However, some employers will accept relevant experience in place of a degree. There are also a number of certification programs that will help you develop the skills you need to specialize and advance in this career, such as CCNA, ITIL, MCSA, Network+, CSM, or CompTIA A+ certifications. In this career, it is vital to build IT experience and skills. You will need to understand how computers work and be able to install and maintain software, hardware, computer systems, and networks. IT is a constantly changing field, so you will need to keep up with new technologies and developments. As an IT specialist, you may work in a variety of settings, including businesses, government agencies, or educational institutions. You may also be self-employed and work as a consultant. No matter where you work, you will need to be able to communicate effectively with non-technical staff and users. As you advance in your career, you may also want to specialize in a particular area of IT, such as security or network administration. With experience and specialized knowledge, you can become an IT manager or director.
