How to Manage Temporary Employees Effectively
Be prepared- Meet with your team in advance to plan what equipment and training the temp employee will need and who will be working with them.
Don’t skimp on orientation and training- Introduce the temp to everyone and make sure they know the office procedures and organization that will enable them to effectively do their job.
Clarify objectives and expectations- Make sure they know what they are expected to do, any deadlines for the work, and your process for completing the work.
Treat them like a team member- They will be more motivated if they feel respected and part of the team.
Take an interest in them- Learn what motivates them and if they have other skills that could be utilized.
Check in regularly- This allows you to deal with problems right away.
Be available- Make sure you are there to answer questions and help.
Work as a team with your recruiter- They are the employer and should know about any issues.
Be mindful of their time- Be prepared to transition their work if they leave before the assignment ends.
Be honest about the prospects of a permanent role- Don’t lie to keep them around longer.
Offer feedback- Give praise where due and correct mistakes.
And ask for feedback!- When the assignment ends, ask how you can improve your onboarding process and management style.
End on a positive note- Thank the employee and keep in touch if you want to work with them in the future.
