Should You Get New Gutters When You Replace Your Roof?

Everyone loves having a home, but no one really likes shelling out the money for major home improvement projects.

However, to be a responsible homeowner, spending money on improvements is necessary if you want to keep your home in good working order and maintain its value.

One of the most common major home improvement projects is replacing your old roof.

When your roof is in good condition, your home functions as it should, and you don’t risk costly problems arising out of anywhere.

But what happens to your gutters when your roof is replaced?

Do you need to have your gutters replaced at the same time your roof is replaced?

Is it more efficient or cost-effective to do both projects at once?

We’ll take a look at that in the article below.

Do Your Gutters Have To Be Removed During A Roof Replacement?

Unless you need gutter repair, your roofing contractor shouldn’t remove your current gutters during your roof replacement.

And even if you do need gutter repair or your gutters need to be replaced, they won’t be removed until after your new roof is installed.

Instead of removing them, your local roofing contractor will take the necessary steps to make sure your gutters are protected during the roof replacement process.

They’ll cover them up, won’t let roofing materials damage them, lean ladders on them, or anything else that might damage them as they work.

Once they’ve finished the roof replacement, they will blow everything out and clean your gutters whether they need to be replaced or not.

Can You Install New Gutters Without Replacing Your Roof?

You can absolutely install new rain gutters even if your roof doesn’t need to be replaced.

But, if you need replacement gutters and your roof is close to the end of its lifespan, you might want to hold off on your new gutters until you need a new roof.

Unless you have faulty gutters that could be destroyed during a heavy rain or storm, it might make more financial sense to wait to do both simultaneously.

Replacing a roof is much more expensive than replacing gutters, so it usually makes financial sense to prioritize your roof over your gutters.

Just remember that both your roof and gutters serve essential roles in protecting your home from potential problems, so never let either fall into disrepair.

Should You Replace Your Gutters When You Replace Your Roof?

It makes sense to upgrade your gutter system while you replace your roof if your gutters are in rough shape to begin with.

If you need to replace your rain gutters, it means you’ve been experiencing clogged and ineffective gutters for some time.

If your gutter system fails, you may discover a wet, damp, or moldy basement with clear foundational issues.

You may also have clogged gutters with leaves and debris, and you may notice that water runoff isn’t being channeled away from your home as it should be during heavy rainstorms.

Other signs that you need a gutter replacement are stains on your basement walls from water seepage or discoloration around window frames.

Signs of damage due to faulty gutters may also include curling wallpaper, damp carpet, or doors and windows that won’t close properly due to a shifting foundation.

These issues may result from storm damage, or it may be general wear and tear due to old age.

Gutters are critical in keeping water away from your home’s foundation, which is important because water damage and foundational issues are expensive and complicated to resolve.

Getting new gutters installed during a roof replacement is cheap prevention to what could be a huge and costly mess.

However, unless you have damaged or 30-year old gutters, you don’t really need to worry about getting new gutters along with your roof replacement.

While you’ll certainly save money by not paying for a contractor to come out to your home twice, unless you have poor gutters, it isn’t necessary.

Having both jobs done at the same time will save on the cost of labor and you won’t have to worry about scheduling them to come out once more to do the gutters in a few years.

But again, only replace your gutters if you’ve noticed they’re in bad condition, there are problems with drainage on your property, and there are clear signs of water damage.

It’s always best to consult an expert to determine your options.
