How do you know if you are a candidate for breast augmentation
Basically, women have two choices to enhance their selves with breast augmentation: saline or silicone gel breast implants. Breast augmentation with saline implants are intended for females who are at least 18 years old. However, women who choose breast augmentation with a silicone implant must be at least 22 years old. Our choice for a silicone gel-filled implant features a unique cohesive gel that holds together uniformly while resembling the natural look and feel of natural breasts.
To better simplify the philosophy of breast augmentation, there are three basic candidates requesting breast augmentation cosmetic procedure in our office. Which one are you?
A female between age 18 to 30’s with developmentally small breasts (A-cup or small B-cup) who simply needs added volume. Their most commonly requested size is a “36 full C-cup”. They are extremely happy following a breast rejuvenation and experience a wonderful transformation that improves self-confidence and total body image.
A female between age late 20’s to 40’s with one or several children and experienced postpartum deflation following pregnancy and breast-feeding. As a consequence, her breasts now appear flat, flabby, and deflated. These female clients are also extremely happy following primary breast augmentation, but may also need a mastopexy / breast lift or combined mastopexy breast augmentation as a combination procedure with both breast lift plus breast augmentation. This determination will be made on an individual basis.
Enhancing Your Breasts with a Mommy Makeover
The breasts are another common area of concern following pregnancy and are often one of the key focuses of a mommy makeover procedure. Pregnancy leads to an increase in breast size that can leave some mothers with sagging breasts following breastfeeding. If this is the case, then you may benefit from a breast lift with or with our breast augmentation.
A breast lift places the breasts higher up on the chest by removing excess skin. Any asymmetry or enlarged areolas that may have developed as a result of pregnancy are also addressed to create breasts that are youthful and perky. Several different options exist for breast lift surgery and depend on each patient’s needs and desired results, such as the incision location.
A breast lift can also be paired with breast augmentation to restore size that was lost following pregnancy, or simply to increase volume and help you achieve your dream body. During breast augmentation, saline or silicone implants are placed to increase size and build the ideal shape based upon your preference.
If you are unhappy with the shape and size of your breasts following pregnancy, then a breast augmentation with or without a breast lift can restore your breasts to their youthful perkiness, along with additional lift or volume. Dr. Thornton will go over all aspects of both procedures with you, helping you choose between implant types, incision locations and implant placement.

How to pick your Breast Augmentation Surgeon?
Any reputable cosmetic plastic surgeon will welcome your questions and want you to be completely comfortable with their qualifications. You should ask yourself questions like: What are the surgeon’s credentials, training, and board certification in a particular specialty and what is the surgeon’s experience and specific training in the procedure you are considering and how many procedures has the surgeon performed? Finally, review a good variety of the surgeon’s before and after photos and ask where your surgery will be performed. You should feel confident in choosing Dr. Michael Thornton, a fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery in performing your cosmetic breast surgery. Dr. Thornton has performed many successful breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and breast revision surgical procedures. All breast surgery is performed at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, an AAAHC and JCAHO accredited surgery center, using only board-certified anesthesia providers.
Do I go above the muscle or below the muscle?
Breast implants can be placed in two general locations, known as submuscular (below the muscle) or subglandular (above the muscle but below the breast tissue). Submuscular placement refers to an implant that is placed beneath your pectoralis major muscle. In contrast, subglandular placement refers to an implant that is placed beneath your actual breast tissue, but above the pectoralis major muscle. One of the main factors that determine where the implant will be placed has to do with how much breast tissue you have to begin with. Most patients who have small breasts with minimal breast tissue will not be able to provide enough natural coverage over the implant if it is placed directly under an inadequate thickness of breast tissue. To minimize complications under situations of insufficient breast tissue coverage, the implant is placed under the muscle. Dr. Thornton will help determine the implant placement that is best suited for you; however, the majority of Dr. Thornton’s patients receive submuscular implants (below the muscle).
Saline vs Silicone breast implants. Which one is right for me?
Choosing the best breast implant type for you depends upon your desired results. There are differences between silicone gel breast implants and saline filled breast implants, but one isn’t always better than the other. Basically, women have two choices forbreast augmentationwith eithersaline or silicone gel implants. Breast augmentation using saline implants are intended for females who are at least 18 years old. However, women who choose silicone implants must be at least 22 years old according to the FDA. If it is important to you that your breast implants feel natural then you should consider silicone gel breast implants, as silicone breast implants feature a unique “cohesive” gel filling that holds together to maintain a natural feel to resemble your own breast tissue. On the other hand, saline filled breast implants are filled with a saltwater (saline) solution that is similar to the fluids in the human body. Saline implants have a firmer feel as compared to silicone gel and saline implants are less expensive than silicone gel implants.

Silicone Breast Implants
For many women, the thought of “silicone” material for breast implants uncomfortably evokes a terrifying history. After meticulous scientific research, debate, and investigational FDA panels, no relationship between silicone breast implants and autoimmune diseases or cancer was found. Therefore, on November 11, 2007, the FDA approved Allergan and Mentor to resume sale of silicone breast implants for cosmetic and reconstructive use in the United States.
Today’s new generation of silicone breast implants are far more superior and safe. Since this information was released in 2007, the public’s confidence in silicone breast augmentation surgery has been restored. At present, primary breast augmentation remains the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure. Today, more cosmetic breast surgeons are recommending silicone gel implants over saline implants.
Dr. Michael Thornton feels silicone breast implants have a more natural look and feel and women are more satisfied with their appearance.
“Because of its rebirth in 2007, many women are now beginning to show a new found confidence and happiness in receiving silicone implants. Silicone breast implants will remain a leading cosmetic surgery trend.” — Dr. Michael Thornton
Cosmetic surgery consultations for clients from Mansfield, Arlington, or the Fort Worth area for breast augmentation are complimentary at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center. For more information about silicone gel implants or to make an appointment, please call us at 817-477-9000.

What are the surgical steps involved during a breast augmentation procedure?
Following admission to the surgical center you will introduced to the preoperative nurses who will complete your paper work, review the consent, and start an IV. You will be happily greeted by Dr. Michael Thornton who will complete your chart and review the procedure’s details and introduce you to the operating room staff and anesthesia team who will be taking care of you. The anesthesia providers will place you under general anesthesia and Dr. Thornton will begin your implant procedure.
The majority of the time, Dr. Thornton will make precise incisions along the infra-mammary crease (the natural crease below your breast where your bra rests upon). The incisions will vary in size from 4 cm to 5 cm based upon the size of the implant. Unless otherwise specified, Dr. Thornton will place your implants under the muscle (sub pectoral) and release the muscle attachments called a “dual plane”. This under muscle and dual plane placement provides a long-lasting appearance with good forward projection along with softening and natural rounding of the lower portion of the breast. Drainage tubes are not placed at the time of procedure.
Dr. Thornton uses a Keller Funnel for breast augmentation for all silicone implant procedures and follows standard protocols for antibiotic irrigation or washing of the breast pocket and implant prior to placement. The Keller Funnel is a plastic sleeve that allows placement of a silicone gel breast implant into the breast pocket with minimal exposure to skin contamination or the potential of cracking the silicone gel shell or implant. Because of Dr. Michael Thornton’s expertise in the use of the Keller Funnel, he has met specific criteria and educational requirements to display “The Keller Funnel Certification Seal” and “Keller Funnel Partner in Education Advocate Seal”.
Finally, following placement of each breast augmentation implant, Dr. Thornton will close each incision with multiple layers of absorb-able sutures; therefore, no stitches will have to be removed in the office. Your final incisions will be covered with a water-proof glue called, Dermabond, and then covered with brown Micropore tape that you will leave in place for approximately 2 weeks. A complimentary soft cotton bra will be provided at the end of your surgical procedure.
Our Top Three Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
Don’t let another summer pass you by – instead, let’s explore the TOP THREE cosmetic surgery procedures that Dr. Michael L. Thornton and Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center can offer to help you create your best self.
Breast Augmentation
At Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Michael L. Thornton, a double board certified cosmetic surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, was specifically trained in breast cosmetic surgery. With his track record of success, years of experience and continued training in the latest breast augmentation surgery techniques, it’s no wonder that breast augmentation surgery is one of our most popular procedures.
Choosing between silicone or saline and implant size are all important decisions that Dr. Thornton can guide you through during your consultation. You will also be able to try on implant “sizers” to get a visual idea of which size best matches your body proportions. Your next step is the surgery itself as Breast Augmentation is performed at an accredited, out-patient surgery center in Mansfield using general anesthesia and usually takes no more than 1.5 hours. You will also personally see Dr. Thornton for follow-up appointments to ensure that you are healing properly.
Liposuction
Liposuction is also one of the most popular procedures performed at Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, and is actually one of the most popular procedures in the U.S. for both men and women. In 2016, nearly half a million people received liposuction, making it the number one cosmetic surgical procedure performed in the nation!
At Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, we offer a range of options to best fit your needs and lifestyle. Dr. Thornton performs both suction-assisted liposuction (the traditional method) and power-assisted liposuction using the MicroAire device. Both of these procedures involve a cannula attached to a suction machine. The cannula is gently moved around while permanently suctioning out unwanted fat. Post-procedure, you will wear a compression garment for up to a month to aid with healing and to resolve the postoperative swelling. We also offer the newest advancements in body sculpting – laser-assisted liposuction (for smaller areas) and VASER liposculpting. VASER is an amazing innovation that is considered the gold standard in liposculpture. A small ultrasound cannula is inserted and ultrasound energy dislodges the fat cells, liquefying them and allowing them to be easily suctioned from the body. Recovery is similar to traditional liposuction, but you will see even better results from the VASER procedure. Dr. Thornton uses VASER for both redo or revision liposuction procedures, male gynecomastia, and high-definition liposculpting.
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
While there are various surgical procedures designed to lift and sculpt your buttocks, the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is one that uses your own fat give you fuller buttocks. This procedure has definitely increased in popularity in the past few years – Brazilian butt lifts jumped by 20% in just one year.
Utilizing fat transfer techniques, the BBL procedure first involves removing fat, typically from your abdomen, flanks, and back, with VASER and / or MicroAire power liposuction. The harvested live fat cells are then processed and finally injected into soft tissues of your buttocks, layer by layer. The result is a two-for-one bonus – your waist is slimmed with liposuction and your butt is rounder and more defined.
During recovery, Dr. Thornton recommends that you do not place any pressure on your buttocks for two weeks. A compression garment will be worn, and once the swelling has subsided and you’re fully recovered, you will be thrilled with your new sexier shape.

How to pick your new size of implant
Choosing the size of implant, measured in volume (cc’s or cubic centimeters) is based on several factors and must be individualized for each body type. Some women have small or petite frames, while others are tall and have broad shoulders.
The goal is to create a natural and well-proportioned feminine figure without looking “augmented”. To better simplify, there are three basic candidates requesting breast augmentation surgery: First, is the young candidate in her 20’s to 30’s with small breasts (A or small B-cup) who just need added volume. The most commonly requested size is a “36 full C-cup”, which on average may require an implant size of 375cc to 450 cc. These candidates are extremely happy following breast enlargement and experience a wonderful transformation that improves self-confidence and total body image. Second, is the candidate in her 30’s to 40’s who has experienced post partum atrophy and breast deflation following pregnancy and breast-feeding. As a consequence, their breasts now appear flat, flabby, and deflated. Sometimes, these candidates may also need a breast lift or mastopexy to reposition or center the areola over the implant. Lastly, is the candidate who already has breast implants but is now requesting cosmetic breast revision due to asymmetry, unevenness, hardening or rippling. These candidates also commonly request implant exchange from saline to silicone gel. During your consultation with Dr. Thornton you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, implant size, and expectations, as your reasons to choose breast augmentation or breast revision surgery are unique and personal.
How to know if you need a breast lift?
The goal of a breast lift or mastopexy is to reposition or “lift” sagging breasts, due to the effects of pregnancy, breast-feeding, and massive weight loss. The end result of these conditions cause the breasts to temporarily enlarge, thus stretching out the breast skin and impairing its ability to support the underlying breast tissue. Once the breast skin has stretched out to its maximum limits, it looses the elastic ability to return to its original shape and the breast skin remains stretched and flaccid. This condition is termed “ptosis” and can be classified as first-degree, second-degree, or third-degree. During your private consultation with Dr. Thornton, your degree of breast ptosis will be analyzed and you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations. Incisions for a breast lift are placed around the dark skin of your areola and along the underside breast crease. However, Dr. Thornton provides every effort to minimize the size of your scars and to make them as inconspicuous as possible. During the breast lift procedure, excess skin is removed and rearranged to tighten the flaccid skin envelope and provide restorative support to the underlying breast tissue. The nipple-areola complex is elevated to a more natural position, restoring your breasts to a more youthful appearance with more fullness and projection. A breast lift is often done in combination with breast implant augmentation in order to achieve the most desirable effect during a single-stage operation. Healing is a gradual process and may take several months before you begin to see a final result.

What is the Recovery process?
The initial discomfort following breast augmentation or other cosmetic breast surgery usually lasts one to two weeks. Your chest muscles will be sore—like the feeling after doing lots of push-ups—and this discomfort is typically gone after 2-3 weeks. Dr. Thornton will provide you with narcotic pain medication and muscle relaxants. You will be fitted with a comfort or sports bra and other breast garments designed to reposition your implants during the healing process. Post-operative visits with Dr. Thornton will be frequent during the first several months to identify and manage any minor complications.
Can I afford Breast Augmentation?
Medical insurance does not cover the costs of breast augmentation or cosmetic breast surgery. However, Dr. Thornton offers affordable cosmetic surgery by accepting major card cards including, Mastercard, VISA, and American Express. In addition, we are pleased to offer various third-party, private payment programs including Care Credit, one of the nation’s leading cosmetic surgery payment programs making it easy to afford breast augmentation. Dr. Thornton provides a convenient breast augmentation “package” that includes the cost of two implants (either silicone gel or saline), surgeon fee, operating room fee, and anesthesia fee, pre-op lab fee, and post-op breast garments.
