I was almost ready to throw in the towel and give up; A very frustrating experience. Fortunately, though, my mother persuaded me to keep going. I am so thankful she did because the day finally arrived when I realized that I was actually quilting - without having to read instructions and without having to ask questions - and it felt just as natural as learning to walk.

The same will happen to you, if you make up your mind that you are going to learn to quilt and do whatever it takes to make it happen. Keep all quilt fabrics in the same basic color family and use small prints unless you are quilting something very large. Many fabric manufacturers like Moda or Hoffman release collections of forty or more coordinating fabrics. These designer fabrics are easy to find at fabric and quilt stores, provide many options to choose from and take out much of the guess work when matching fabrics.

You can either hand quilt or machine quilt your baby shower gift. Following the perimeter of the shape or you can choose to use a quilter's pencil and template and draw a design and quilt the design. Either way, you will be stitching through all three layers, which not only fasten the layers together, but create a design, as you quilt. Your baby shower gift will be complete when the edges are finished and the binding is sewn in place. Of the two types of bindings, crosswise grain and bias, the former is a good choice because there is less risk that a split would damage the entire side of the quilt. Crosswise strips also stretch well enough to curve when needed along the outer edge of the quilt.

While starting a quilting project, there are a number of decisions that have to be made and the most important is the design you have chosen to use. This depends on what project you are doing. In traditional quilting, usually the block design outline is followed. You will have to stitch about a quarter inch from each seam line that is in your appliquéd or pieced patch. Another quilting process is stitching in the ditch. This method involves stitching into the seam directly. The design shape comes out and the stitches become almost invisible when the fabric on the sides of the seam puffs up around it.

In design quilting, your quilt block will be embellished with a particular design. All you need to do is trace your design on your patch. When the stitching lines follow the block's outline it is called echo design quilting. Here the stitching lines are repeated every quarter inch. Beginners do not usually practice this as very heavy quilting is involved.

In overall design quilting, the blocks pattern is ignored and an overall design is used. Diamonds, grids of squares and clamshells are three designs that are used often in overall design quilting. The fabric and pattern that you choose affects the type of quilting design and vice versa. Naturally, if you are going to use stencils as your design method, then you should choose a fabric that has enough room for stenciling.

Once you choose your pattern, design and fabric, you can start to piece your quilt top. You start by creating a template, then cutting the pieces followed by sewing together the blocks. On completing the blocks, they must be connected to make the quilt top. You have to lay out all the blocks to ensure that their size is uniform and everything is in its correct position. Don't place similarly designed blocks too close to each other. You should then divide your quilt into rows, vertical or horizontal, and then begin sewing.

Once you have finished your quilt top, you should start layering it together with backing fabric on the back and batting in the middle. The most popular backing is polyester batting. There are various thickness available for this type of batting. It is recommended that the thread count of the backing fabric be low and that it be loosely woven. The batting and backing must be slightly larger when compared to the completed quilt top. Usually, seaming together the backing fabric is required. Traditionally, three equal lengths of the fabric are seamed together vertically. First the selvage is cut off and then the fabric is shrunk before using it.

The backing should then be placed on the floor, the other side up. Make sure that it is around two inches larger when compared to the quilt top. Then the batting is rolled out. Cut it about an inch smaller and an inch larger than the backing and quilt top respectively. The quilt top is then centered face up on top of the batting. Then the three layers are pinned together. Then they are basted from the center of the quilt. You can either use z stitches or running stitches for the basting.
