What Is the Difference Between a Temporary Employee and a Temp-to-Hire Employee? The main difference between a temporary employee and a temp-to-hire employee is that a temp-to-hire employee is hired with the intention of becoming a permanent employee after a probationary period, whereas a temp employee is only hired for the duration of their assignment. The probationary period can last from several weeks to several months. During this time, the employer will evaluate the employee to see if they are a good fit for the position. If they demonstrate they have the necessary skills for the job, have no issues with punctuality or absenteeism, are able to thrive in the work environment, and work well with other team members, they will usually be offered a full-time job at the end of the temp period. If not, the assignment will simply end. In contrast, temp employees are hired on a temporary basis to provide coverage or handle an increased workload. Employers will sometimes extend a temporary employee's assignment if they are doing well and there is more work, or may even offer a truly outstanding employee a permanent position if it's available, but there is no guarantee that this will happen.
